Keeping a positive outlook can be a struggle during times of uncertainty, and understandably so. It’s easy to feel surrounded by doom and gloom when the media is peppering our newsfeeds with gloom and doom. The constant flood of information from the news and social media sites makes things even more difficult. Taking your mental health seriously is essential, and mindset seems key.
There seem to be two camps out there regarding mindset during challenging times. Some people can focus on the positives, while others seem more challenged to keep a productive and positive mentality.
This “new normal” we’re facing comes with many new ways of living. Attitude can be everything when it comes to a healthy mindset.

Maybe you find yourself unexpectedly out of work and at home with the kids. You could give in to the worry and let it stress you out. Or you can use this extra time spent with children and bring the family closer.
I heard many reports of families in financial crisis between 2023 and 2024 to the point that they were unsure if they could make their house payments. Or, business owners who have struggled continuously because consumer spending was (and still is) down, forcing them to drastically adjust how they operate to keep from shuttering their doors.
My friends, these are all common stories and I could go on forever. I am not suggesting we all adopted a Polly Anna way of thinking, but I do believe that God gives us these trials and tribulations as a form of “teachable moments.”
If we focus on what we are grateful for and less on what we are making, life will continue to be a beautiful ride.
And these tough times will make us stronger in the end.
If you are one of the millions of families falling short on income, cut expenses to the bone and get creative. Not all learning is done in the classroom or behind a computer screen.
How about taking the kids outside for a nature walk to collect leaves or flowers and label them?

Or, check into ways to save on groceries by cooking from scratch and eating out less. Focus on the things you can control.
Sometimes, something as small as what you’re wearing can make all the difference in how you feel. Make a point to get out of your jammies and into comfortable everyday clothes. Even if you’re working from home now, getting up and dressed like you were headed to the office may give you the mood boost and positive motivation you need. Achieving a positive outlook can be as simple as daily positive affirmations. Find what works best for you.
Giving yourself a mood makeover is something we can all do to help ourselves stay focused on the positives during this time of uncertainty.
Another way to stay positive is to unplug. Taking a conscious step back from the TV or computer screen is necessary. Try not to let yourself be inundated with negative news 24/7. There are still good things happening in the world! Do something to make yourself smile.
Remember, no one is perfect. If you feel yourself slipping into negative thinking patterns, try consciously to rearrange your mindset. A positive attitude can go a long way!
